We are going to try to use Vonage at the office.
Vonage is telephone via broadband.
We have ordered the service and begun the process of switching over our two office phone numbers. Equipment has arrived for one phone line.
I started fooling with it today. First problem, line two is not yet activiated. Problem number 2, the way I set it up today, the quality of the phone call was like a static-y cellphone call. Problem 3, can't get the third ethernet connection (the second one in the Boss's office) to work.
Problem #2 may be simply resolved if I put the phone equipment in a better spot. I had it sitting on top of my hard drive, and the Boss says that the magnetic energy there could easily have been interfering. Problem #1 will probably be remedied when the equipment arrives for the second phone line. I thought the equipment was interchangable, but it may not be. Also, I ordered the second line about 2 days after I ordered the first. So possibly the second line just hasn't been turned on yet. Though 911 service was confirmed on the second line, so that's a little confusing.
Ethernet problem will probably require technical service from outside the office.
Customer service interaction with Vonage thus far has been poor. The guy who took my order on the first line was poorly trained and got some very basic things wrong. Tried to call for assistance with first setup today and was on hold so long both times that I couldn't stay with the call. Next week, probably Tuesday, I am planning to just devote the morning or possibly the entire day to getting it to work.
Meanwhile, The Boss' TimeMatters software had a major breakdown. I was trying to wipe it off his hard drive, reload it, and reestablish the host/clone relationship today, but had a big problem just getting the software to recognize the location of the data file of the host. Dammit. I'll spend Monday on the phone with them resolving that problem.
The Boss joked today that he needs a larger technical support staff...
Vonage should be worth it, if we can make it work. TimeMatters had been needing to be fixed for some time. But my real work is being neglected, and I don't even particularly enjoy this kind of technical support work. I would much rather be playing with WebPosition, which I ordered yesterday.
