In the past I have merely known OF Rush Limbaugh. I knew he was an objectionable radio personality who would probably offend me.

But he was also irrelevant to me. As are plenty of other pop culture types. Like Oprah Winfrey, whose show I have never seen. And soap opera stars. And Britney Spears. And Lady Gaga, for that matter. I am irrelevant to these people's corporate sponsors, because these people are irrelevant to me. Well, maybe Oprah is the reason we have President Obama and Limbaugh is the reason we have the Tea Party. But I am not in tune enough to know if either of them deserves that much credit.

I just read an article quoting about a dozen outrageous things Rush Limbaugh has said over the years, and I can imagine they are probably only the tip of the iceberg. Many of them were far nastier than what he said about Ms. Fluke. As long as he was only saying those things were mainly people who thought he was great cared, it was not a problem. However, it seems to me that Rush accidentally got relevant to the wrong people with his comments about Ms. Fluke, and his sponsors noticed.

Sadly, one analyst who knows the radio business says that what really keeps Limbaugh in business is his market share, which is unrivaled, and can support midday. But still, the apology is striking. Too bad it probably won't shut him down.
