Caller: May I speak with Boss?

CK: He's working from home today. Can I take a message and have him call you back?

Caller: This is Mike Murphy. My number is 703-552-2771.

CK [not recognizing name or voice]: Is this about an on-going matter?

Caller: Not really.

CK [becoming extremely suspicious]: Will he know what it is regarding?

Caller: It's a personal business matter.

CK [allowing herself to sound slightly suspicious, but still polite]: Just so you're aware, you've reached the gatekeeper. If he doesn't recognize your name, he probably won't call you back.

Caller [with slight chuckle]: He should call me back.

CK [cheerfully]: OK! I'll let him know!

Boss recognizes the name, thinking it is a colleague, but then checking colleague's known number, sees it does not match. He tries to call the number and it cannot be completed as dialed. I check caller ID and the number matches, and I realize the guy was calling from some place called OOMA, Inc. Looking them up on the internet, I realize that htey are some sort of VOIP provider.

Well, that's a persistant telemarketer for you. Stick with your lie! He almost got a call back. If the number hadn't been weird, he would have gotten a response on the cold call.

I'd be mad at this guy for letting all his opportunities to come clean about the actual purpose of his call go by. But at least he didn't try to pretend to be Boss's old friend, which lots of these guys do, so I give him credit for that.
