Stargate Univese
Oct. 4th, 2009 05:36 amNon-spoilery, but will go behind the cut anyway.
Mostly because the plot was so route that there is no real reason to bother with spoiling.
What I was hoping for from Stargate Universe was something fresh. Not just the same medieval village or Athosian village every week.
I missed the first 20 minute due to DVR glitch, but the style of the first hour or so, in particular, made me optimistic that at least we might see our Stargate world through fresh eyes. Of course, Husband just said they were trying to "Battlestar" it up. Which actually is true. Particularly after they got to the ship, it definitely had a serious Battlestar feel, down to the IOA woman's badge and nice suit.
Pilots are hard, so I'm totally reserving judgment til it's had time to get past the startup issues. I was neither offended by the pilot nor blown away.
Pilot only gave us only two female military characters, and both are already fucking male military characters. Man, I HATE that. I would have liked to see a strong woman military role, since the military is so key to the Stargate franchise. One is not only sexualized, but weepy, too. Ick.
There was one funny line (at least it was genuinely funny to me, but it was THE ONLY ATTEMPT AT A JOKE IN THE WHOLE THING!!!!) and it was a crude joke at a woman's expense. That is NOT what I'm looking for from Stargate. One of the things we all loved, I think, about early SG-1 was the humor built into the character interactions. OMG, there was NONE in this pilot. It was sooooooo serious. Again, this may be an attempt to appeal to the Battlestar crowd, but they need to lighten up or they *will not* be keeping me as a viewer.
Again, because of pilot issues, I will reserve judgment, but there weren't any really, genuinely likeable characters. Ugh, the main scientist. Thank goodness they killed off that one guy (not the main scientist, another guy). Ugh, the Senator's daughter. Scott, the green officier, is OK. Young, the commanding officer, is acceptable, but quite bland. Eli, the brilliant mathematician accidental tourist is no Rodney or Daniel, but he has potential. Ugh, the IOA representative. Ugh, the whining civilian staffers.
One thing I was thinking about the whole thing is that these people, staffing an offworld base, seem *awfully* piss poor in a crisis situation. They are SGC staff, they've just come off the fight with the Ori, and the goau'ld before that, and they're acting like my office got blasted onto a spaceship. That could be a long-term problem for old Stargate fans. Even Felger was better in a crisis than some of these people. Though I realize there is some debate about whether his episodes every happened or were just fantasies. :D But still, you get my point. On the one hand, I want to be forgiving on this point, becuase how are they going to do something fresh if they are trapped by the canon of a huge, decade old franchise. On the other hand, I want to see some good scripts here, not just a lame Battlestar ripoff with Stargates in it.
All that said, I am *highly* amused to see that there is already a
young_scott community. Those are some slashers who are *ready* to slash, I gotta tell you. :D On this topic, since slash for me has been character driven, I haven't seen enough of these characters yet to see who's gonna be slashable.
UPDATE: Oh, wait. I think I see what they did there. OK, so the weepy sexualized female character may in fact have been, like, the opposite of sexualized and I totally creeped up *that* relationship. Still, if she's his kid, I'm still unimpressed.

Date: 2009-10-04 01:02 pm (UTC)my expectations are low, but i'm going to take a look at it this week on hulu at work.
and yes to the humor! i NEED the humor in the earlier shows; it's so necessary! even in a drama, or actually especially in a drama. otherwise you get so worn out. the humor was one of the best things about the gateverse, imho.

Date: 2009-10-04 01:18 pm (UTC)Please note if that one character turns out to be the guy's daughter and not his lover, well, I *did* miss the first 20 minutes or so...
I was thinking that this show has a lot of components of that one fanfic, where the Asgard put everybody within 5 miles of Jack O'Neill onto an Asgard ship and hurl them out into deep space to rescue at least some of the Taur'i from the goa'uld. Sometimes I wish they would bring in a handful of us fandom writers for their script team. What would it be like to put you, me, Paian, Synecdochic, Rydra, Zats, Green_Grrl and Starting Gate in a room? Honestly? It would be awesome, is what it would be like. *nods*

Actually, I'm not sure it would be totally good to put exactly that group of writers on the job. Unless Showtime wanted to reaquire the franchise and give us a really late night time slot.
