As it happens, I visited her website (scroll down). They're in the freezer section, either with the speciality stuff - she's vegan - or just next to the Banquet pot pies...
Could someone explain vegan, vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian, or any other forms of speciality requests that one might receive RSVP'd at dinner. I don't wish to offend anyone as some of these folks I'm not really close friends with. This seemed like the place to enquire. Thanks.
I'll prod uisgich to come over here, as I just exploit vegans and vegetarians for their food, but am actually a carnivore. :D
In my experience, vegetarians eat no meat, though some people who describe themselves as vegetarians will actually eat ugly but healthy meat, ie fish. :D I don't know where they get off calling themselves vegetarians, anyway, but some of them do.
In my experience vegans eat no animal products of any kind, and most of these folks that I have known have extended eating to include all kinds of animal exploitation from wearing leather (which a lot of vegetarians won't do, either) to trying to avoid as much as possible products produced with animal testing, including even medical products, to the extent possible.
Personally, I think it would be pretty rude to get too specific with my host about ovo-vegetarianism, which one presumes means they will still eat eggs, or lacto-vegetarianism, which I think means they will eat all milk products, or whatever. If I had a serious dietary restriction, I'd RSVP in writing, then try to talk to my host personally, rather than try to dictate the menu or wrangle a special meal by mail. I wonder what Miss Manners has to say about it. I'll prod her, too, at work in the morning. Of course, I never go anywhere that I don't know the host, so I'm a bit of a social clod about that kind of thing.
Personally, if someone RSVP'd to say they were vegetarian and didn't go into any more depth than that, I'd take it that they ate dairy and eggs and had no other dietary needs. If you have any doubts, though, or to put your mind at rest, I'm sure they would be happy to be contacted so you could confirm that. Speaking as a vegetarian, I was always happy to talk to whoever I was going to be dining with about options, and always appreciated someone taking the time to do that.
And some veggies are stricter than others. I don't eat much wheat either, and usually the only dairy I eat is sheeps cheeses, but if I'm going to dinner and someone is taking the time to make something vegetarian, I'm happy to eat pasta or ordinary cheese. But maybe that's just me!
It does get trickier as you move away from straight forward vegetarianism into ovo-vegetarians who eat eggs but no dairy, and lacto-vegetarians who eat dairy but no eggs and vegans who don't eat any animal related products at all, including honey.
When I've had guests in the past and had doubts, I've either contacted them, or gone for a full on vegan alternative, which means you've got it covered no matter what!
And if you are ever stuck for veggie/vegan recipes, drop me a line, or I'm sure CK could help out on that score too :)
