THURSDAY: Rodney Yee: Power Yoga Total Body (60 minutes)
I was amazed, returning to this today. This is my favorite yoga disc, and I would do it every day, except that I don't have the time anymore.
Before, when I did this routine, I always warmed up with step aerobics first. But today, I knew my body needed a rest from step, so I thought, heck, I'll try it cold and see how bad it is.
The beginning standing forward bends are definitely much more pleasant when your muscles are already loose and hot, but Mr. Yee eases you into the lunges and standing poses slowly, so that eventually, after a few salutations, my forward bending was deep and pleasant.
Nothing was really difficult for me except Half Moon, but I've always been hideous at balance poses. Warrior III went very well, though, so...
I absolutely cannot practice again on the wood floors. I'm going to have to go up to the bedroom or down to the basement. Even with the yoga mat, any posture that causes the top or heel of my foot to touch the floor is excruciating. It ruined the joy of the seated forward bending, usually my favorite, soothing part of the practice, because it flat HURT, not in a stretchy muscle way but in a something is hurting me way.
Wheel. This used to be my test for my current level of yoga skill (whichis very beginner and self taught, let me say). Wheel was nothing. Wheel was easy. Now, I don't have the endurance with it that I had before. I could not hold it as long as I used to. And I was only able to go up on the toes once, the rest was flat footed. But wow. I thought there was no way I would do Wheel today - that I would stop at Bridge, work up to it. The only explanation for this is the weight lifting.
Actually, I think my ease in the standing postures probably had a lot to do with stronger legs, too. I could feel the difference in how I relaxed into the poses and held them and shifted between them.
That said, there were also interesting spots of weakness in contrast to the things that seemed easier.
I think it is probably the fact that while I have been working hard on getting stronger in the arms, shoulders and legs, I was neglecting my abs. And yoga is, of course, all about core.
But overall, it was FANTASTIC to get back to this routine again. And SO AWESOME to find that it wasn't too difficult to do without the aerobics first. Now that I know that, it is possible that Tuesday and Thursday will become yoga days. OMG YAY! I thought on my current schedule yoga would have to just be an occassional treat, but maybe not!
