Documents I am working on in Word randomly become read only and I can only keep changes by saving under a new name. The thread shows a lot of people thinking they found the answer - virus scanning, auto saving - and then finding out that wasn't really the problem.

There is a reason that I deleted all the new crap and loaded Office 2003. I couldn't stand it. It wasn't compatible with anyone anywhere. The developers need to die a slow horrible death.

*sigh* Stupid .docx. Just FYI, though I know it is not relevant to you at the moment, you can set Word 2007 to default back to saving as .doc. Also, I believe there is a patch out there for old versions of Word that will let them open .docx.

I was infuriated by .docx. Seemed like nothing but a stupid marketing scam to me. But I was reading some Word 2007 traning materials, and apparently, .docx documents cannot contain macros. .docx is an attempt to reduce Word's use as a virus transmitter. For whatever justification that is worth.
