I went out this morning planning to skip the usual Saturday Costco run in favor of visiting the nursery for a few herbs. I decided not to start from seeds. I want one pot of each herb, ideal for just buying a healthy plant, putting it in the pot, and letting it mature. I got two different kinds of thyme, peppermint, basil, lemon balm and rosemary. Also, for funsies, I got a tomato.

Then we went grocery shopping.

We were so efficient and there was enough room left in the trunk, that I decided we had time to do the Costco run after all.

Then the gas pumps weren't taking debit cards today.

Then the Barbarian dumped my change all over the ground. Then it took me extra time to find the dirt.

We were next in line, our stuff on the conveyor belt, when the staff started dashing through the store telling everyone to get out of the building.

*sigh*

Costco was on fire.

I swear. If I had skipped the gas line. If I had not let Barbarian get her hands on my wallet. If the dirt had been where it was last week. And I would have gotten out free and clear. But nooooooo.

*scowls*

So now, I have my plants, but no dirt for them. AND I have to go back out, and probably to a different Costco that I don't like as much.

At least, maybe if I go late in the day it won't be crowded.

*glares*

All I can say is, at least it really WAS on fire.

*glares more*

If it wasn't such an annoying day for you, I'd probably say something like "The next time you need dirt and the Barbarian has tossed your change on the ground, you might try looking for dirt along side the change. It's my understanding that there are billions of tons of the stuff literally right under our feet."

But your day has been irritating and you're probably feeling cranky, so I wouldn't say anything like that because you'd hunt me down and hurt me.

Ah, ha! But you would be wrong. Because she emptied the coin purse while riding in the cart inside Costco, which has remarkably clean concrete floor. So. :p I want the good dirt, with the plant food in it. I've never tried to grow a tomato in a pot before. And the dirt that is in my pots for the herbs has been outside in the weather for about four years. I suspect it has no nutrient value left.

Miracle-Gro potting soil is good. It makes a huge difference here, anyway. Virtually every pot on our patio has volunteer violets in it, yet the garden, which gets the same amount of water and sunlight, does not. And yes, every gardening book I've ever read says you should throw potting soil that's more than two years old into the garden, and get new.

Agreed on the Miracle-Gro. Easy to use and effective. I don't think you brew coffee at your house (am I wrong?) but used coffee grounds can be added to the soil and most plants like that, too. I top off the dirt in my houseplants with those, it looks nicer than just dirt. Or I just toss them in the veg garden.

Lemon balm. GOOD FOR YOU! It grows fast and has lots of uses! Dry lots of the leaves for later!

Costco was ON FIRE. I swear, girl... only in your world do errands suffer such fates.
