A post before sleeping
Jan. 8th, 2008 11:59 pmI corresponded to someone this evening about how I am getting paranoid.
There was this great farm in Charlottesville that I used to fantasize about buying someday. Beautiful mountains, middle of nowhere. Now, as we consider buying a place - sadly, just townhouse in suburbia - I have been thinking of my horsey country farm again. And thinking about home defense. And the usefulness of the, scatter gun, was it? for deterring criminals by sound alone, but thinking how that really wasn't practical, with kids in the house.
Hello? Brain? Since when does firepower figure in your nesting fantasies?!
I blame two culprits:
1. The County of Fairfax and their stupid influenza preparedness pamphlet. It got me all hyped up to have enough water and supplies in here for a two week siege. And also suggested medical/first aid supplies, as influenza preparedness was actually great preparation for any number of civil and natural disasters. The next thing you now, CK's thinking about whether the ground level windows are defensible...
2. Damned apocofic, which I SO should never read. Now, I feel so unprepared for the next goa'uld attack and occupation.

Date: 2008-01-09 09:20 pm (UTC)Any pump-action shotgun makes a distinctive and frightening sound when the action is worked. Short barrels -- 18 to 20 inch -- are best for home defense. With the proper load, shotguns won't penetrate interior walls, meaning you can use it an occupied apartment building and probably not kill your neighbors by accident.
Children in the house don't preclude firearms; there are ways to insure their safety without compromising the utility of the weapon. It is good practice to teach your child firearm safety even if you have no weapons in the house. Every child should be able to identify a firearm, know not to touch it and know to immediately tell an adult if they find one. You don't have to scare them, but they should understand that guns are very dangerous unless they're handled properly.
