A woman just called me and asked me about the timeline for an uncontested divorce.

After I outlined it for her, she says, Do you ever file in Alexandria City? Because my friend got her divorce in Alexandria City the same day.

I didn't beat around the bush. I said, "That's not true."

She said, "Yes, it is! I was there. I had to be a witness."

I explained that prior to going to Court that day, the woman had followed many other steps that had taken probably two months. But the caller continued to be adamant that she had gotten the divorce the same day.

I finally said, "If you can find a lawyer that can get you a divorce in Virginia in less than two months, please go hire that lawyer."

Then she proceeded to be shocked that Boss could not represent both her and her husband in an adversarial matter.

*rolls eyes*

*snickers* She'd hate it in Alberta Canada. Takes at least a year because you have to have been 'seperated' for at least that before they'll process. And the paperwork!! There must have been a dozen different filings, and we had an uncontested, no split debt, divorce.

*sighs* Of course, after the year, since there wasn't any extra filings or sudden contesting of the divorce, they simply mailed the finalized certificate without having to appear back in court.

Since they have no kids, in Virginia they can divorce after 6 months if they sign an agreement settling all property and support issues. They have been separated long enough but didn't know about the need for a settlement agreement. But at least they had a clue about separation time.

If she knew it only took one day to get a divorce why call you for information in the first place?

I swear some people can't take the time to get their facts straight first but will still have to insist they know better than the experts.

Dude. I did take great glee in telling her to hire the other lawyer if he was so great. :)

Damn you CK! Why do you lie to these poor people? A friend of a friend got a divorce in Dominion Heights in three hours, and her husband got one at the same time in Silver Springs, but his took two days because he was in Maryland. You really should learn something about the law before you go around giving people advise.

Oh! You were calling about the one day divorce! Well why didn't you say so! Also, we charge half price for the one day divorce! *facepalm* I just didn't realize that was the one you were asking about!
