A couple of random things
Sep. 11th, 2007 09:37 pm1.
seidhle was considering naming a missive "XII". Which, we all know, is TWELVE (12) in Roman numerals.
Of note, my Boss, of European descent, writes the date September 11, 2007 as follows: 11 IX 07.
Follow along people.
I had a minion this summer, a very bright and intelligent AP student, sharp as a tack. High school student.
I asked her to organize Boss' time sheets in reverse chron for me. Easy, brainless task I was pleased to hand off to someone else so as not to have to do it myself.
A task I had previously asked Boss' daughter to do for me. A young woman who is also very bright and intelligent, but from Catholic school, don't know if she did AP or not. Certainly wasn't doing AP math, poor thing, but that is besides the point. The point is that she told me she organized it in reverse chron and it was a disaster. So I gave it to other clever student.
And the next day, I went to look for a hypothetical billing slip that would have occurred during a certain date range and the supposedly organized time sheets were not in reverse chron.
They weren't in ANY chron. They were so totally not chron I was completely bemused.
So when minion arrived I said, hey, what's the deal.
And she revealed that it was kind of confusing putting them in reverse chron because she didn't know what arabic numerals the roman numerals represented.
I am now wondering if Boss' daughter failed in her attempt to carry out this simple task for the same reason.
I am appalled. I mean, it's one thing not to be able to figure out the copyright date on the damn movie screen in the 3 seconds they flash it up there.
It's another thing not to know the numbers from 1-12.
I mean, there's basic cultural knowledge and basic cultural knowledge and this is pretty damned basic stuff here.
2. Oh, damn. I forgot number TWO (2) (II). UPDATE: Reviewed friends' page, remembered 2. Haha, I think butch middle-aged lesbian lady was flirting with me at the store. :D

Date: 2007-09-12 01:54 am (UTC)If it's any consolation, I'm only a few years older than these kids, and I can count to 39 in Roman numerals without thinking about it (I've forgotten what 50 is, so I can't get 40), and I can puzzle out the rest if I think about it.

Date: 2007-09-12 02:37 am (UTC)II. I'm so flattered. Of course, I totally made the assumption about her based on i. buzz cut; ii. slacks and other not too femme business clothes; iii. sensible black flat shoes; iv. the flirting. But of course, I kind of flirted back, plus I was only slightly more femme than her (aside from the girly hair). And of course, there's my lesbian shoes. So. Can't tell anything from a chance Safeway encounter. Still. :D
