Very successful day, pie-wise.

Four large pumpkin pies and one mini pie.

The Small Boy helped me make the pie shells.

There was a glitch when I managed to dig out, from the far reaches of the cabinet, a can of evaporated milk that expired in April 2001. Yikes! Have no idea how that happened. Anyway, I only realized the expiration date problem because the milk was a weird color when I poured it into the batter. Sigh. Off to the store... Though I suppose it would have been off to the store regardless.

So, between The Small Boy "helping" and the trip to the store, the pies took an excruciatingly long time. But they're done!

Also, made little apple pies with the scrap crust. I miss Carter Mountain. It's just not as fun making apple pie with apples from the store...

And, on top of that, the entire kitchen is clean! And The Small Boy's November homework is done! V. good day.

Still no sign of EK. I think she might be working for doubletime this weekend. Pooh.

Carter Mountain

Carter Mountain is a mountain in Charlottesville, Virginia. Charlottesville is in the Appalachian Mountains. The mountain is sorta flat on top and is covered almost entirely by an apple and peach orchard. They have also plated a vineyard, though I don't know what they are doing with it as of yet. From mid-August to mid-November, it's an apple wonderland up there. But we moved from Charlottesville to Northern Virginia a couple of years ago, and due to car problems weren't able to get down to Carter Mountain *even once* this apple season. So have been buying pie apples at the grocery store, which makes me very sad. AND we haven't had any cider this year at all... Waahhhhhh! And now I will be nostalgic for Charlottesville the rest of the day. God, I miss it! Beautiful mountains - horsey country - Mr. Jefferson's University... Waaahhhhhh! again. Sniffling away now.

Click here. It cycles through pictures of the C'ville area.

Don't be sad ...

Thanks for the links. Charlottesville looks lovely, very pastoral. I don't know of anywhere in Scotland, or in northern England, for that matter, where you can hand-pick apples from orchards. Maybe down south. We do have lots of pick-your-own soft fruit farms, and I usually fill the freezer with raspberries and strawberries etc, but had no time to do that his year, so I know how you feel about using store-bought fruit.

Now I'm off to get the atlas out - like to know where places are!

Picking apples

I was always too lazy to actually pick my own apples. But they had gigantic crates of whatever was in season to buy by the pound or bushel. Plus, delicious cider! The Husband, being from New England, has a bit of a cider fetish, and therefore, cider from the store is not allowed. Orchard cider only - ergo, none this year...

We did like to indulge in hayrides. Oh, and apple cider doughnuts! drools a little
