So.

What are the significance of DanielJackson's glasses?

We, the severely myopic public, want to know.

Many times, the cinamatographer, or whoever it is who runs the camera, has indicated that DanielJackson can see little or nothing without his glasses.

They like to have him wake up in the infirmary and everything is blurry, til some loyal friend gives him his glasses back, and thereby his sight.

Also, to my amusement, the scriptwriters have included several little throwaway lines to emphasize his poor eyesight. In the first episode where he wears the night-vision goggles, he comments to Col. O'Neill, "I don't think they're my prescription." In another episode, the team finds him after he has been without his glasses for a while. He puts them on, takes a look at Jack, and says, "Was you hair always like that?"

However, other times, the director, or possibly the actor (MS), tend to use the glasses more as a prop.

DanielJackson perches them on top of his head (cute, but not very practical), takes them off and hangs them on the front of his shirt, like you might an unneeded pair of sunglasses, and goes into very dangerous and hostile situations without them. The latter could be explained away. Maybe he has contacts that he wears when he's going into a possible combat situation, or going to have to wear the infrared goggles, or some such, but nope. Later in the same mission, he'll show up with his glasses on again. He can't possibly need glasses and contacts, can he?

Now, in light of how he wakes up in the infirmary, it would seem that DanielJackson's eyesight, while not quite as bad as mine, is pretty damn poor. He certainly wouldn't be going anywhere in the field without his corrective lenses.

So.

What is the significance of the fact that DanielJackson, probably legally blind, runs around without his glasses on half the time?

Are there times when DanielJackson chooses not to see?

Considering an essay on this topic.

Oh no. I am harmed by your Stargate obsession. Help. Help.

*I* think the glasses are because James Spader made a really attractive nerdboy in the movie and then the character had glasses in the series so viewers would know he was the James Spader character.

Otherwise, I haven't watched it, so I don't know, I'm just being sociable.

Well, of course

I agree that the overarching reason the character was given glasses was to indicate that he is the helpless academic, in need of special care and protection by the military members of the team.

But it's much more interesting to assume not that the director said, "Take the glasses off in this scene, I like it better without," but that *the character* took his own glasses off. Why? Where would someone who needs glasses this badly get a nervous tick like that? I would NEVER take my glasses off, even around the house. I would be paralyzed without them. The character is deliberately blinding himself...

And thank you for being sociable. And as I *know* you do the Sci Fi thing, I highly recommend the show, BTW. Husband and I rate it second only to Farscape, and 3 months ago, we were total unbelievers... :)

On another topic entirely...

Oh! Small Boy wants to know, after you have a petpet, can it run around your house? And also, can more than one NeoPet live in the same house? Ha! And it occurs to me... Can he be your NeoFriend? :)

Oddly enough, my NeoPets don't have a house! They're quite content with lots of food and toys and books, so I never actually bothered. My babies are homeless. ;D Petpets are there to make the neopet happy, and for the *zero* maintenance that a Petpet is, it's worth it. If he doesn't have one, I actually have a Puppyblew in my stash that he's welcome to. And of course he can be a neofriend!

Do you have your info up anywhere? And under instructions, I *just* acquired a Petpet for him this morning. Do you have more than one Petpet? I thought you could only have one at a time?

Here's me: http://www.neopets.com/randomfriend.phtml?user=daisygamgee

Each neopet can only have one petpet at a time--I won a Puppyblew from one of the "wheel of...." games (I can't remember which one), after all my babies already had a petpet, and put him in my safe deposit box until I decided what to do with him. So he's in neostasis or something!

Good grief. I just poked over to your page at Neopets, and in the process was surrounded by icy skeletons that stole 50 Neopoints!!!!

That's one nasty neighborhood you live in there, chica!

Small Boy can't make friends, I think because we truthfully entered his age when he joined the site. They have protections for the little players...

As a person who LUNGES for my glasses .5 seconds after awaking, and being stuck in them till I fall back in bed that night.... I have noticed this too. It's not FAIR to have Convenient Glasses Vision, but it's a syndrome that cute intelligent guys on the tee-vee are VERY prone to catching. *nod*

Sooooooo funny... :)

Heh. Convenient Glasses Vision. Good one. :)

Another Heh. Please note lack of glasses in icon.

I've only seen a few episodes of the show (no SciFi for me!), however, I don't know if I would have noticed even if I watched it religiously.

I have a very near-sighted left eye and a slightly far-sighted right eye. The two work together in a way that always amuses my optometrist. I have glasses, but only wear them for work or heavy reading. To me, Daniel's glasses mannerisms would seem perfectly natural.

So interesting!

That is so interesting! Do you get headaches, or anything? And that's a real possible excuse for Convenient Glasses Vision! I would never have thought there was one! Shows what I know. However, the camera shows us Dr. Jackson has severe myopia beyond that. :)

I don't have the joy of amusing my optimetrist. Though she did get to puzzle over my astigmatism and how to fit me for contacts.

I do, however delight all my dentists! :) They always want to know if I had braces (Nope!), and coo over my lack of cavities and fillings...

If I do a lot computer work without my glasses, then yes, I'll get headaches. And sometimes it throws off my depth perception.

I still have my wisdom teeth. Does that count?

Mid-thirties. I even have a filling in one of them. I was given that option *or*, in the dentist's words, he could just pull them all now. My response: "Are you insane?"

My next dentist assured me that those teeth could stay as long as they were healthy. Yeah!

I find Daniel's action pretty natural. I'm a little older than he is and have glasses that correct from 2 1/2 feet from my face to really far away. If I'm looking at something close up, I take them off. When I wear my contact lenses, I have to use reading glasses for close work.

Shanks hates the glasses. That's why the Convenient Glasses Vision.

*sigh*

Yes, yes! I gathered in *reality* it's something like that. But do I look like a person who is concerned with something as stupid and annoying as *reality?* Please. *rolls eyes*

Please review my comments to Daisy (above), who was also trying to make me acknowledge some sort of reality-based reason for the Convenient Glasses Vision.

:D

Meanwhile, I had almost gone back and edited this post, as there were a couple of waking-up-in-the-infirmary episodes that I've seen in the last couple of weeks (Season 3), where the camera representing Daniel's point of view could apprently see fine. But then there was another one where the camera was blind as a bat.

Hmmm. Another reality-based possibility. The camera needs glasses?
From: [identity profile] porntestpilot.livejournal.com
Oh. Heh. Okay. Well, in non-reality? I think Daniel's vision was improved after both the use of the sarchapagus [sp?] and ascension. Because if you note, AR!Daniel was much blinder than our Daniel. :D
From: [identity profile] muck-a-luck.livejournal.com
Oh, dear. I also had that thought. We are now scaring me. And I think it's spelled sarcophogus. Yup. Spell checker went for that, but it *always* looks wrong to me...
From: [identity profile] porntestpilot.livejournal.com
It's the hivemind. You can't fight it. Look at what happened to the people in Resident Evil.....I can't spell ever. In any language.
From: [identity profile] muck-a-luck.livejournal.com
Sorry to bring this up so late in the game...

But shouldn't the hivemind help us spell? What good is the stupid thing, if not?!

And you should submit your icon to [livejournal.com profile] _dangerpants_.
From: [identity profile] porntestpilot.livejournal.com
Nah, no help with spelling. I'm not sure it is useful for anything other than making sure we're all bat shit crazy? and psycho about penguins?

Ha! I didn't make it though...and he's not wearing any pants?
From: [identity profile] muck-a-luck.livejournal.com
We mods are more about the *spirit* of danger!pants. So that would me more like danger!flower! Or possibly pants!failure. *snickers*

Hmmmm. The thought occurs that with all the new icon space, I need a dangerpants icon... *ponders*
From: [identity profile] porntestpilot.livejournal.com
Okay, the word pants is my all time favorite word in English so I admit, I'm tempted, but hey, Skatergater made it, you can take it if you want?

Pants!failure. That's awesome.

Heh. Go to the community's memories and check out the entries under pants!failure. *snickers more*

*giggles* When was Danny blind as a bat? God, I'd love to watch that episode again. *g*

If he's really as myopic as I think he is and he takes his glasses off, he's an idiot. I can't see two feet in front of me without them. It's nothing but pretty blurry colors, you know? *g*

I think you overlooked the obvious: In TV-land, glasses = smart. If he didn't have glasses, we wouldn't know how smart he is, regardless of how many languages he speaks.

Not that I'm complaining. I've been benefiting from the glasses = smart sterotype for 25 years!

Another question is: Since he breaks them so often, why doesn't he ever get a more updated pair? He keeps updating his clothes and his hair but not his specs. They're totally 1990.

Ha! Just came to this comment. Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I was doing the pregnancy thing, then the birth thing, then the baby thing. Anyway...

I *know* why the actor wears glasses from a practical, scripting point of view. Exactly as you say. Plus, he's a professor type at the beginning, too. Gotta represent that with glasses. Plus, he's a geek. Another category of person who *must* wear glasses.

But my interest is more in looking at it from the point of view of what it means for the character, since if you go ahead and take Daniel's behaviors as canon, as part of Daniel, then it's a much more interesting question.

Um.

To the extent it actually *is* an interesting question. Which it may not be. :)

Maybe Daniel is like me when it comes to glasses. I have had the same glasses style since about 1995, and that's the way I like it! Ha! Maybe they are the cheapest frames! Or possibly the most durable! Maybe it is easier just to tell the optometrist, give me my regular, rather than go and shop frames. Particularly since shopping frames is such a pain, unless you do it while wearing contacts, which apparently he does not. And who could he trust to come along with him to shop. Certainly not Jack. I guess Sam, maybe. Or Janet.

Aaaannnd. The horse is dead! :)

From: [identity profile] crossbow1.livejournal.com
Yup, dead horse. And yeah, shopping for glasses is a pain in the butt when you can't see. I usually wear the same frames until they literally fall apart, and once upon a time I actually used to fix them with safety pins and masking tape and keep wearing them. A true geek should have had at least once incidence of taping his or her glasses together!

Hey there. I know we don't know each other, but I was reading this (http://brainofck.livejournal.com/60026.html) post from this writer that I total adore and she linked three of your pages. This is one of them. The other two, I can't see because you've probably f-locked it, you know? Hmm. I'd like to read what you wrote, if [livejournal.com profile] brainofck thought it was worth mentioning about Daniel. God, I adore that boy. Just thought I'd let you know.

Oh, and in the matter of the glasses, I totally get you. Because, dude, the boy is really blind. I'd like to see him go to the optomestrist, you know? I can't see the big E letter in that stupid tablet, and I wonder if he can. *giggles*

From: [identity profile] hangebokhan.livejournal.com
I feel your pain! I was doing an experiment in bio a few years ago to test vision, and the E was a blob! I had to call my optometrist to get a guess at how bad my vision was XD I can understand him taking off his glasses in battle situations though, he probably is unable to see upclose, but he can see far away, so the glasses would just be an encumbrance ^^

Date: 2007-07-13 10:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sdlucly.livejournal.com
Actually, if the E was a blob, then that means (at least in my case) that I can't see squat in long distances. I can read perfectly fine without my glasses, but when I'm, say, on the street just kinda walking or trying to take the bus, I can't even read the HUGE lettering on the top of it. *nods* So, *shrugs* Depends. I think it's weird, point.

Also, in "Moebius", Daniel loses his glasses and he says that he can't see the person standing before them, not really, so that should mean he's myopic (can sea up close, but not from afar).

From: [identity profile] hangebokhan.livejournal.com
I agree with you on Daniel's vision issues as well as the e-is-a-blob thing. I was just trying to help the poor writers with that huge plot hole!

Yeah, I started posting my love for Stargate in my journal, as I continued to watch the episodes, and you made a few comments here and there, and actually became kind of friends with [livejournal.com profile] brainofck. *nods* Don't worry about it. *g*
