So.
What are the significance of DanielJackson's glasses?
We, the severely myopic public, want to know.
Many times, the cinamatographer, or whoever it is who runs the camera, has indicated that DanielJackson can see little or nothing without his glasses.
They like to have him wake up in the infirmary and everything is blurry, til some loyal friend gives him his glasses back, and thereby his sight.
Also, to my amusement, the scriptwriters have included several little throwaway lines to emphasize his poor eyesight. In the first episode where he wears the night-vision goggles, he comments to Col. O'Neill, "I don't think they're my prescription." In another episode, the team finds him after he has been without his glasses for a while. He puts them on, takes a look at Jack, and says, "Was you hair always like that?"
However, other times, the director, or possibly the actor (MS), tend to use the glasses more as a prop.
DanielJackson perches them on top of his head (cute, but not very practical), takes them off and hangs them on the front of his shirt, like you might an unneeded pair of sunglasses, and goes into very dangerous and hostile situations without them. The latter could be explained away. Maybe he has contacts that he wears when he's going into a possible combat situation, or going to have to wear the infrared goggles, or some such, but nope. Later in the same mission, he'll show up with his glasses on again. He can't possibly need glasses and contacts, can he?
Now, in light of how he wakes up in the infirmary, it would seem that DanielJackson's eyesight, while not quite as bad as mine, is pretty damn poor. He certainly wouldn't be going anywhere in the field without his corrective lenses.
So.
What is the significance of the fact that DanielJackson, probably legally blind, runs around without his glasses on half the time?
Are there times when DanielJackson chooses not to see?
Considering an essay on this topic.

Otherwise, I haven't watched it, so I don't know, I'm just being sociable.
Well, of course
Date: 2005-06-24 02:34 pm (UTC)But it's much more interesting to assume not that the director said, "Take the glasses off in this scene, I like it better without," but that *the character* took his own glasses off. Why? Where would someone who needs glasses this badly get a nervous tick like that? I would NEVER take my glasses off, even around the house. I would be paralyzed without them. The character is deliberately blinding himself...
And thank you for being sociable. And as I *know* you do the Sci Fi thing, I highly recommend the show, BTW. Husband and I rate it second only to Farscape, and 3 months ago, we were total unbelievers... :)
On another topic entirely...

Date: 2005-06-24 02:45 pm (UTC)Each neopet can only have one petpet at a time--I won a Puppyblew from one of the "wheel of...." games (I can't remember which one), after all my babies already had a petpet, and put him in my safe deposit box until I decided what to do with him. So he's in neostasis or something!

Small Boy can't make friends, I think because we truthfully entered his age when he joined the site. They have protections for the little players...

Date: 2005-06-25 08:24 pm (UTC)I have a very near-sighted left eye and a slightly far-sighted right eye. The two work together in a way that always amuses my optometrist. I have glasses, but only wear them for work or heavy reading. To me, Daniel's glasses mannerisms would seem perfectly natural.
So interesting!
Date: 2005-06-25 08:43 pm (UTC)I don't have the joy of amusing my optimetrist. Though she did get to puzzle over my astigmatism and how to fit me for contacts.
I do, however delight all my dentists! :) They always want to know if I had braces (Nope!), and coo over my lack of cavities and fillings...

Date: 2005-07-19 10:48 am (UTC)Yes, yes! I gathered in *reality* it's something like that. But do I look like a person who is concerned with something as stupid and annoying as *reality?* Please. *rolls eyes*
Please review my comments to Daisy (above), who was also trying to make me acknowledge some sort of reality-based reason for the Convenient Glasses Vision.
:D
Meanwhile, I had almost gone back and edited this post, as there were a couple of waking-up-in-the-infirmary episodes that I've seen in the last couple of weeks (Season 3), where the camera representing Daniel's point of view could apprently see fine. But then there was another one where the camera was blind as a bat.
Hmmm. Another reality-based possibility. The camera needs glasses?

Date: 2006-07-30 05:53 pm (UTC)If he's really as myopic as I think he is and he takes his glasses off, he's an idiot. I can't see two feet in front of me without them. It's nothing but pretty blurry colors, you know? *g*

Date: 2006-04-14 08:28 pm (UTC)Not that I'm complaining. I've been benefiting from the glasses = smart sterotype for 25 years!
Another question is: Since he breaks them so often, why doesn't he ever get a more updated pair? He keeps updating his clothes and his hair but not his specs. They're totally 1990.

Date: 2006-08-11 04:51 am (UTC)I *know* why the actor wears glasses from a practical, scripting point of view. Exactly as you say. Plus, he's a professor type at the beginning, too. Gotta represent that with glasses. Plus, he's a geek. Another category of person who *must* wear glasses.
But my interest is more in looking at it from the point of view of what it means for the character, since if you go ahead and take Daniel's behaviors as canon, as part of Daniel, then it's a much more interesting question.
Um.
To the extent it actually *is* an interesting question. Which it may not be. :)
Maybe Daniel is like me when it comes to glasses. I have had the same glasses style since about 1995, and that's the way I like it! Ha! Maybe they are the cheapest frames! Or possibly the most durable! Maybe it is easier just to tell the optometrist, give me my regular, rather than go and shop frames. Particularly since shopping frames is such a pain, unless you do it while wearing contacts, which apparently he does not. And who could he trust to come along with him to shop. Certainly not Jack. I guess Sam, maybe. Or Janet.
Aaaannnd. The horse is dead! :)

Date: 2006-07-30 05:44 pm (UTC)Oh, and in the matter of the glasses, I totally get you. Because, dude, the boy is really blind. I'd like to see him go to the optomestrist, you know? I can't see the big E letter in that stupid tablet, and I wonder if he can. *giggles*

Date: 2007-07-13 10:21 pm (UTC)Also, in "Moebius", Daniel loses his glasses and he says that he can't see the person standing before them, not really, so that should mean he's myopic (can sea up close, but not from afar).
