Ice storm this morning. Schools closed. When the weather clears up, will go out to get groceries, possibly other errands, and maybe swing by the office. Watched some of the Fellowship cast commentary at The Small Boy's request. Now reinacting the battle of Helm's Deep.

UPDATE: Ice quickly turned to rain. Went to store. Found a few new toys and got the groceries. Got portable CD player for Husband for Valentine's Day. Dropped off groceries at home and am now working on a half day at the office. Small Boy in tow.

Traded him his Strider for my Helm's Deep Aragorn, and also my more heavily armed Boromir in Lorien cloak for his Boromir. Desk now well guarded and Small Boy v. pleased with his new playmates.

So what's the difference between a snow storm and an ice storm?

So you now have Boromir and Aragorn on your desk!!! So not fair!!!

I think SM is so overloaded by LOTR at the moment that he would spontaneously combust if action figures started to appear. Maybe I'll give it six months!!

So what's the difference between a snow storm and an ice storm?

One can drive carefully in snow and probably get where one wants to go 95% of the time. It is not possible to drive in ice. I went to work on public transportation after an early morning ice storm a couple of years ago. In the space of about 12 miles, I saw at least 16 major accidents, including 2 flipped cars.

Surely you have experienced an ice storm? A storm that is just sleet or freezing rain or a mix of both, possibly with just a tiny bit of snow thrown in (the infamous wintry mix)? In the DC area, we usually get snow, but get a fair share of ice and wintry mix, too. Down in NC, snow is an occasional treat, but ice is much, much more common. When I lived in Michigan, they used to like to tease me about how Southerners can't drive in snow. I would point out that we rarely ever have snow, only huge ice storms. They had one ice storm in the three years I lived in Michigan, and I was very smug that day. None of them could drive in it either...

Ice storms are also incredibly dangerous, as the weight of ice accumulating on trees, powerlines and even roofs causes lots of downed trees and power outages. They can devastate an area and in the worst cases it can take days or sometimes weeks for a rural area to recover. Heh. Watch Ang Lee's The Ice Storm for weather reserach...

However, on the positive side, ice is absolutely beautiful on trees. You have never seen a winter wonderland like your yard after ice. Everything is coated and looks like crystal. It's gorgeous!

he would spontaneously combust

Your poor SM. I put up with mine for years before it paid off. My obsession now just merges with his, though he is often taken aback at my knowledge of actors in v. small roles, and other movie-related tidbits. I walked him through the circumstantial evidence for EW/DM the other day... He had never seen the pictures of DM/VM touching tounges and replied to my IM, "Ewwwwww!" :)

I can honestly say that I don't think I've ever seen an ice storm. We have had amazing blizzards, torrential rain, and of course, freezing conditions, but I don't think we've had an actual ice storm!!

Excellent - some sort of hideous weather that Scotland doesn't get!!

I know the effect you are talking about, but this happens here when the weather warms just a little bit, then freezes again.

Your poor SM

One thing you should know about "poor SM"!!

When we first met, I was really into fantasy stuff, and after breaking up with my previous boyfriend, had decided that I wanted to get together with someone who had the same tastes in fiction as me. So, when I met SM, and we got to talking, he said he loved reading, and was intrigued by fantasy stuff, although had never really got into it.

I had just finished "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant", so gave him the first one to read. He finished it quickly, so I gave him the others. Finally, I had someone I liked, and could talk to about stuff I enjoyed. Every now and again, I would give him something else I had enjoyed to read, and he would say he was a little busy, or not in the mood for that sort of thing, and would get round to it later.

Realisation came slowly!!

The guy I had fallen in love with didn't even enjoy reading very much, let alone fantasy! (The only time he reads is when we are away on holiday, and then we both read several paperbacks each, but he won't read fantasy.) He said he liked me so much, and the fantasy thing seemed so important to me that he did give it a try, but just couldn't get into it!

So, I married a con artist!!!

But a wonderful one, I must admit!!

That completely weirds me out.

Go you! :)

Well, the, he knew what he was getting into when he married you, though I suspect the intensity of LOTR fandom can be quite shocking to the unsuspecting. He will *love* your present! You must share with him as soon as it arrives! *snortle*
