We have made a mighty shield.

Heh. Reading about Vikings, I have learned, much to my surprise, that shields are usually made of wood and leather. Go figure. And the boss in the middle is for punching your enemy. Military technology...

So, I picked up a large Staples box from the trash at the office and brought it home. Guided by the book Technology in the Time of the Vikings, we first cut a large circular piece. Actually, I did this in two half circles so we would have a larger shield. Turned out oval instead of circular. Not Michelangelo, here...

Then, cut long strips of cardboard. We glued them on diagonally over the break in the center of the shield. When the glue dried, we trimmed the "boards" and got an excellent result! The Small Boy colored the boards and we built a boss in the middle from a stack of smaller and smaller circular pieces.

In other morning news, Small Boy tortured himself with Bernie Bott's Every Flavor Beans. Yesterday, he had two before school that he liked. So today I said he could eat 12 as a morning snack. I told him if there were any he didn't like, he should put them back in the bowl. Several minutes later, he said, sounding very distraught, "Mommy, I didn't like any of them!" I went out and he had bitten and rejected 10 of the twelve. He was very sad...

I, meanwhile, have been eating Honeycomb (for my friends outside the US, this is a very, very sugary kids' breakfast cereal) and drinking Mountain Dew. I'm feeling very cheerful! :)

I suppose that's one of the good things about having kids. You get to do cool stuff like that!

And are the Bertie Botts beans like the Jelly Belly beans? Just introduced SM to them, and he was reluctant at first, but then finished the packet!

So what unusual flavours are there? I sorta guess there aren't any bogie or vomit flavoured ones!

They are made by Jelly Belly Candy Company.

I despise (sp?) jelly beans, and therefore did not try any.

However, according to the label, there are "Buttered Popcorn, Sardine, Spinach, Banana, Bubblegum, Ear Wax, Tutti-Frutti, Vomit, Grape Jelly, Cherry, Black Pepper, Blueberry, Cinnamon, Grass, Watermelon, Booger, Dirt, Green Apple, Lemon Drop, Toasted Marshmallow... Note: Bags are randomly assorted and may not contain every flavor."

The ingredient list, more to be trusted, I imagine, lists such ingredients as spinach powder, black pepper, and beeswax (possibly not a flavoring - very far down the list, below the dyes).

And you, too, could check out Technology in the Time of the Vikings from the library and make yourself a shield. Possibly a paper mache helmet and some boots, as well. No instructions on swords or battle axes, but you could improvise! Go on! Work hard one Thursday and surprise the SM when he gets back from his meetings! ;)
