Freud and The Small Boy
Dec. 9th, 2004 08:01 am"Forget about your ego, forget about your pride
And you will never have to compromise."
So say the Indigo Girls in Joking. It was playing in the car last night as Small Boy laughed at the word ego.
Which let to me explaining my probably quite lame understanding of the ego, superego and id.
Small Boy, clever child that he is, immediately observed that he was probably under the influence of his id a lot of the time. I agreed, saying that I was pretty sure it was one of the premises of the theory that children are creatures of the id, and as they mature their superego comes to the fore. Though we also agreed that he is developing a lovely superego in many respects.
Welllll....
Mom sent me my birthday present by mail yesterday.
The box is sitting on the kitchen table. Small Boy just came through the kitchen. He says, "You shouldn't have left that on the table. But my superego won!" I was confused. He said, "The present!"
Now indulging in maternal gloating over my offspring. Sorry. Moving on. :)
