The hobbits are playing soccer in the conference room. RS is supervising.

UPDATE: Have given Small Boy is own mobile phone and showed him how to page me. Mainly so that I can call him and tell him when he is being too loud...

The Small Boy was invited to a skate party this weekend by his current girlfriend, Julia.

I must say that if I had known before I accepted the invitation that it was a going to be a skate party, I would probably have tried to wriggle out of it. But I had already said yes before I found out, soooo...

We went.

I thought that I would skate with him, but as I was putting his skates on him I realized that there was no way I was going to be any good to him on the ice. I am from a place where people are terrified of frozen ponds, because they are all death traps and if you are within 30 feet of one, you will probably break through the ice and drown.

Of course, the local mall had a skating rink, and I actually did take lessons. They told us the walls were made of poison ivy. I was never very good at it. The last time I went I was 11? 12?

The long and short of it is, I realized that me + Small Boy on the ice = disaster.

So I hoped that he could tag along with some of the other skating parents, but no dice. One kid per parent looked like the size of it. But he was near tears because he so wanted to go out, and suddenly he got up the nerve to try it on his own. So he grabbed the wall, stepped out on the ice, and went for it!

He had a blast. He went out the large door in the middle of the long side. He skated down to the end, got out the small door, and was ready for another round. But the large door was crowded with people and he couldn't get out. So we marced all the way down to the other end and he skated the whole length of the rink. And around we went again! The third time, he wanted to try skating by the big door on his own. He was doing great, and only looked like he was going to fall when he lunged for the wall again and knocked himself off balance. It was amazing. Lots of fun!

Beyond being thrilled at The Small Boy's joy in skating, I made a few other observations about ice skating.

1. At least around here, ice skating is a sport. Mostly young, healthy, atheletic type people there. I'd recommend it to singles looking for cuties.

2. It is very cold at ice skating rinks.

3. There were lots of Russians there. Could have been a coincidence, but just seems weird that the day I went would be Russian day. Therefore, I'm guessing that skating is a thing for the Russian expatriate community, at least in this area.

4. Little kids can skate! It was amazing! Kids The Small Boy's age just flying around the ice, trying some simple figure-skating type moves. Really cool!

Well, school let out Friday.

That means that I am no longer governed by the public school schedule. The Small Boy is back in full-time day care til the school year resumes, which means that I can drop him off much earlier. I am going back to 8-4 at the office, rather than the 9-4 plus an hour at home in the morning that I have been doing since last August.

Although when I started this work at home schedule it was a relief to get some work done out of the office, at the end of the school year, it was starting to drive me kinda bonkers. Looking forward to a couple of months of a normal schedule. Of course, the school won't announce The Small Boy's schedule until abouttwo weeks before the school year actually starts, so who knows what the fall will bring...
