Lady Chatterly
Sep. 13th, 2004 07:50 amHave been reading Lady Chatterly's Lover, finally. Very interesting book. Says a lot of things about sex that either ring very true or that I have thought myself. Also, says a lot of things about society and the way people behave toward each other. Am impressed at how well James Wilby really got what Lawrence wrote about Chatterly. Either the script or Beanie didn't quite capture the wounded gentleman hiding in gamekeeper quite as well, no criticism of his performance intended. Poor Joely Richardson didn't get the greatest character to work with. Her screen portral of Connie is probably the best that could be done. Poor Connie is a depressed mess for a lot of the book (I'm about half-way through), and her emotions are very internalized, with a fake exterior.
The book has a very unfinished feeling to it, though. I think it would have benefitted from a good editor. I don't know anything else about Lawrence, or if he is known for a particular style, and if that style is respected, but his repetitive use of certain phrases is very distracting to a good little essay writer like myself.
In a totally ass-backward way, I would recommend this book as interesting AFTER watching the film. I'm sorry. The book is OK, and some of it is quite interesting, but what I have taken most away from it is sort of guidance and filling in the blanks for watching the movie.
I don't think I'm horribly shallow. I just think that this book is, well, *shrugs*. AND, must be emphasized, I'm not done yet. Maybe my attitude will change after I've got the whole thing completed.
