Here's one.

This guy gets a ticket. He has a trial date set. He is going on a couple of week trip out of the country. He wants to fight the ticket. He contacts a lawyer at the last minute to get a continuance so the trial will not occur until he gets back from being out of the country. He leaves the country without knowing if the continuance will be granted (though they almost ALWAYS are, except DUI).

Guy is back from abroad. Paralegal calls client and says, hey, you have a new court date in a couple of weeks. Do you still want a lawyer? Great! We will represent you! Please get your driving record and bring it with you to the hearing. He says he will do so.

Boss calls today from Court. No client. Paralegal checks voicemail. It is client calling at 8:30 (1 hour before hearing), asking what he's supposed to do!!! Um. Go to Court? For your traffic hearing? That you knew about? Duh. So Boss calls guy back. Guy is in a meeting and not coming to Court! On top of which, guy has not bothered to get his driving record.

You know, this is a minor thing. But even so, I can't remember the last time I had a client with this much lack of respect for the Court!

*shakes head*

Oy. My ex-husband did a lot of this kind of thing--he'd get a hearing for custody or child support or whatever, then not show up. Finally, he did show, and the judge took a long look at the record, called in a sheriff, immediately declared him in contempt of court both for wasting the court's time and willfully not paying support, and made him empty his pockets onto the table and give me every cent he had except enough for gas and tolls for the return trip.

Okay, that didn't really have anything to do with your post, really, I just thought of it and got a wicked glee from remembering it. ;D

Heh. I love that kind of story in a support situation. People who don't pay their support are scum. Loving your judge!
