The Permian Mass Extinction
bagend1993: We were watching a documentary about the mass extinction at the end of the Permian, and you have never seen a funnier sciene program in your life. [AN: Because Husband was MST3K-ing it.]
bagend1993: They were looking for "the killer".
bagend1993: And they kept proposing different theories of what "the killer" was.

bagend1993: I think that was the first thing he said, but then he got started, and everything they said after that was hilarious.

bagend1993: It was actually a great show. We learned a lot about the causes of the Permian mass extinction.

bagend1993: The Permian extinction, to refresh your memory, was right BEFORE the dinosaurs. 95% of all species, animal plant insect etc, were destroyed.
bagend1993: They think it was a double whammy.
bagend1993: First, there was massive volcanic activity in Siberia. Basically all of Siberia became a volcano.
bagend1993: Enough CO2 was released to increase temperatures world-wide by about 5 degrees.
bagend1993: This is the going estimate on what we are doing right now with CO2 from hyrdrocarbon consumption.
bagend1993: The global warming took about 2500 years or so.
bagend1993: THEN...
bagend1993: The oceans heated up.
bagend1993: Under the oceans, to bring you up to speed, is, yes, FROZEN methane.
bagend1993: Methane is the most potent greenhouse gas there is.
bagend1993: So the warmed oceans thawed the methane, and tremendous amounts were released into the atomsphere.
bagend1993: The global warming from this looks to have been about another 5 degrees.
bagend1993: A 5 degree increase in temps=enough to destroy about 60% of all species.
bagend1993: A 10 degree increase in temps=enough to kill almost all life as we know it.
bagend1993: And that's when I nearly wet myself...
