Does She Talk?
Aug. 11th, 2004 07:17 amI was listening to "Does She Talk?" in the car the other day.
This is a song by Matthew Sweet from the early 90's. Lyrics can be found here.
I used to not think too much about this song. It was either the guy himself, talking/thinking to himself about his new pretty/slutty/stupid girlfriend, or possibly one of his jealous friends talking/thinking about her.
But last night, listening to it in the car, I realized that, deliberate or not by Mr. Sweet, this song is about a guy jealous of the girlfriend, because he wants to be with the guy.
The dead giveaway that I can't believe I missed for all these years (*** represents nasty guitar sound in the song)(these two "verses" are at the end, with an intervening verse)-
Well I can *** you up the ***
You can *** me up the ***
Alright
You're gonna like it
You're gonna like it...
This has often bothered me as a kind of stupid part of this excellent song, since as a woman, I'm not ***ing anybody *up the* anything. Well, without some sort of tool, anyway. But - duh - not an issue if the two people being represented by the pronouns are male...
SOOOOooooo... Wondering if there's anybody out there who can shed light on this verse for me.
Because they took channel 23
Off the air last night
Down home
What the heck is/was channel 23?
