Juan of the Dead
Jul. 17th, 2013 10:47 amWe watched Juan of the Dead last night. Pretty funny, and definitely better than I expected. Zombie movie with the addition of socialist humor. (And subtitles, so you can feel classy while watching something trashy!) It was made in Cuba and I'm amazed, since it was allegorical as hell. Reviews warned it would be extremely homophobic, and there were winceable moments, but it was more complex than you would think. La China, one of the important secondary characters was trans, and as a character he got as much respect as any of them - it was a comedy, so they were all a bunch of losers. And there's a scene where Lazaro "comes out" to Juan and asks to have sex with him as his dying wish, and Juan, clearly uncomfortable and upset, eventually agrees. It turns out to be a joke, and Lazaro insults him for agreeing, and then they laugh it off in manly fashion, but I think the agreement makes it more complex than, I dunno, if he'd refused or shoved him off the building or something. Anyway, if you are into zombie movies, you'll probably laugh at this one.
Warnings for male genitalia, actually nudity all around, public masturbation, graphic violence, homophobic language.
Darn it, La China had a great quote about a soldier he meets, but I'm not finding it anywhere. Something to the effect of "God made this guy all dick."
