Movie Mini-Reviews
Jul. 7th, 2012 07:06 amHusband is a creature of completeness. Yesterday, Iron Man 2 arrived. He says there will be no Hulk movies. We'll see. :) If he had ordered IR2 AFTER our viewing of Tropic Thunder, that would be different.
It was OK, but it had serious problems, one of which was the lack of laugh out loud funny, since with a movie that silly you should laugh more. Nick Fury brought a few good lines, but he was Mr. Exposition, mainly. The Feds would spend SO MUCH MONEY on the lawsuits for stealing Stark Industries tech. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure Tony would get arrested for that kind of conduct at a Senate Hearing. And really, Tony Stark is going to set up a critical experiment in such a way that he pointlessly destroys the foundtion of his house, you know, while he and the experiment are IN THE BASEMENT? No. That scene was clearly so that RDJ could show off his bod, and the special effects guys could lazer something. Srsly.
It did some things super right, and very subtly - possibly too subtly. Like I'm not sure it was clear that the whole horrible birthday party was a deliberate setup to give War Machine to Rhodey. And while Tony ogles Natalie, he really only seems to do that when Pepper's around, and I'm pretty sure he never actually comes on to her unless I'm forgetting something. If he does, it's at the restaurant in Monaco, and that would have been in a very public setting for public consumption. He has a perfect opportunity in the scene before the birthday party (in fact I'm pretty sure she came on to him for no obvious reason in that scene unless we're supposed to think she has a thing for him after all, or maybe it was part of her assessment?), and he doesn't even look at her. And, of couse, they never hit the point, but it's pretty clear that Tony was named after his father's Russian partner, Anton Venko. I bet there's slash for that. :D Also, Tony is fluent in French.
There was a moment with Coulson and a - sheild prototype? second sheild partially completed? As in Captain America's sheild, pulled out of the box Howard left for Tony. In hindsight, a Coulson moment. I was also amused that apparently Tony slipped his minder. They chose not to point out that the sheild would be vibranium. For that matter, do they explain that in Captian America? I don't remember anything about his shield. I wonder if I was out of the room for that? I was thinking that watching Avengers, when Thor brings his hammer down on the shield and they level a couple of acres of woods, that seems pretty random, as Avengers gives no context for that at all.
I did find myself irritated for the entire movie that they recast Rhodey. They guy they got is perfectly fine, but I liked Terrance Howard a lot.
And now, on to Moon. Really super huge spoilers, do not read if you want to get full enjoyment of this movie some day.
Then, because Sam Rockwell, who plays Hammer in IR2, is the lead in Moon, Husband thought we could have a theme movie night. We haven't finished Moon yet, though it seems like a good movie - we gave up with 45 minutes left so I could go to bed at 11:00. Will probably finish today. I figured 75% of the plot of the movie out, though, WAY earlier than Husband expected. It was like when I knew the twist from The Sixth Sense after watching the trailer and my brother was really irritated with me. Husband wasn't irritated - more shocked, I think. Oh, well. You read enough and watch enough TV, and you start to get ideas. Ha. Or maybe Husband forgets that I am, of course, super smart! :D Also modest. What? No spoilers, you say. Well, revealing that there is a Sixth Sense sized plot twist seems like a spoiler to me. It's like Roy in the IT Crowd, I don't want to guess the twist! :D
