Look at me DO WORK and NOT read
princessofgeeks's probably totally awesome recs. Well, after this post, I mean.
Saw 300 this weekend, with Husband, whose bachelor's and master's are both in history, bachelor's with a focus in Ancient history, and, of course, the RiffTrax. We laughed our asses off. The movie was artfully done, and the visual component did not annoy me nearly as much as I expected, though I think watching this movie too many times could possibly induce SAD, what with it being filmed in gray-vision and all. RiffTrax was hilarious, btw, definitely one of their funniest ones. And GO ME! I managed to coincidentally go off to do something else during the obligatory rape scene. Srsly, directors, suprise me and have ONE male-oriented action-adventure movie where the strong female character DOES NOT get raped. No, I'm not high on Husband's left over vicodin. SHUT UP.
I was thinking about how movies idealize kings/queens/dictators. In this movie, religious leaders are corruptible, as are the politicians in the representative body of government. But the king/dictator is the good character. I think the appeal is that the viewer can identify with a lone character who has the power to make independent decisions that mean something. In a way this was a movie about a morally strong couple with a strong, loving marriage, working as a team to try to accomplish a difficult and important task, in the face of the barriers thrown up by society all around them. It's nice to imagine yourself as the king or queen who can possibly take your own best judgment, apply it, and bring about a change to better your world, even if it means great sacrifice. You can accomplish something meaningful. It's a fantasy we can all get behind.
