My Day, by CK
Feb. 17th, 2009 09:17 pmI woke up this morning with the worst headache I have had in a very, very long time. Possibly ever. It felt sinusy. I came downstairs, took ibuprophen, pseudofed, and 8 ounces of Mt. Dew, about 30 minutes later, was sure I was going to vomit. Lay down next to the toilet and cried. Which I think helped to clear out my sinuses, because about ten minutes after that, finally started to feel better. Had shower, felt better still. Went back to bed for an hour and woke up feeling more or less normal. Yay, modern pharmaceuticals and hot showers!
Arrived at work. Computer would not boot. The lights were on, but nobody was home - ie, the orange power light came on, the scanner burped, the CD drive opened and closed, but the disc light didn't do anything and I couldn't hear anything from inside the CPU.
Sent computer via messenger to repair guy. He determined that it was either a) the motherboard or b) the CPU.
All critical data is backed up, so Boss said, don't bother with repair. I think I'll be using the backup desktop that usually sits powered down on his office desk. Hoping that it is affordable to get a ghost of the old harddrive, though, because although there was no substantial data loss, it would be a pain in the ass to have to reinstall all my software on this other machine. Also, although we are going to give the dead computer to computer guy to scrub the data then use for parts for the charity he builds computers for, I am goign to ask him to send me back my memory upgrade, so I can make the critter I'm going to be using work faster and better. He can have the old chips from dead computer pre-upgrade, if he would like them.
It was a weird day. Weird computer, icky tummy a fair part of the day.
But. I got in a little exercise at the end, and yesterday and today are in the ballpark of the Lenten fast, less than 1700 calories each day, though I can tell *really* getting down to 1500 every day is going to be hard for me. Well, it's supposed to be a sacrifice, right? Actually, today I would have made the target, but the only caffiene I had in the house was real Mountain Dew, and the only thing I could stand to consider putting in my queasy stomach to cushion all the drugs was a cookie. 180 calories right there that I definitely would not have eaten were I not ill. So tomorrow should be better.
