Gardening news
May. 19th, 2008 08:09 pmThe dirt was eventually purchased at the other Costco.
Sunday morning AG33, The Barbarian and I went out on the deck and filled all the pots with soil and AG33 actually helped me pot the plants. We also planted a packet of flox seeds I had laying around in a drawer in the existing dirt in the planter hanging on the outside of our fence. I also had a package of coleus which we put in another pot. The tomato is out on the back porch where it can get full sun. I'm crossing my fingers that the bright partial sun on the deck is good enough for the herbs.
Meanwhile, sanity struck. I have a book called A Child's Garden that The Barbarian and I have been reading together and it had a picture of a child in a pumpkin patch.
I realized that there was no way on God's green Earth that I was going to successfully and sanely grow pumpkins in my rather large deck planter. The planter is about 7 or 8 feet long, but only 18 inches wide. Or so. It is right against the HVAC units, only separated from them by lattice.
This morning, AG33 and I dashed out to Home Depot and bought a package of ornamental gourd seeds.
We'll still have to be sure to keep the vines out of the HVAC, but I think we'll be much more successful with something smaller. We planted 3 hills, which is cramming them together a little, as they should be 6 feet apart, per the seed packet. I'm hoping it will all work out. I want as many varieties as we can reasonably get. They also advertise themselves as a flowering vine, so I'm hoping for a show.
So now we are set. Just waiting for the gourds to grow, now. I'm concerned about the quality of dirt in the planter. I made the mounds from the remaining potting mix, and I suppose if the plants do seem to be thriving I can water with fertilizer.
AG33 is very excited about gardening, and both kids had massive fun playing in the dirt. Makes me look forward to bigger yards and bigger gardens in the future.
I still want to get a hummingbird feeder and some raw peanuts for the jays and squirrels. But the important part is done. The plants are out there growing. :)
