Boy, 4, Found Wandering on D.C. Highway

FALLS CHURCH, Va. -- A mother was under arrest Wednesday on child endangerment and other charges after authorities said she abandoned her 4-year-old son on the Capital Beltway, then struck him with her car when he tried to get back in.

The boy was treated at a hospital for cuts and bruises, police said. He later was placed in the custody of a child protective services agency.

Police picked him up after receiving a call late Tuesday night from motorist who said she had found a child wandering along Interstate 495.

"I said, 'Why are you out here?' And he said, 'My mommy left me. She was angry and she pushed me out of the car,'" the driver, who asked not to be identified, told WJLA-TV.

Virginia State Police said an investigation determined that Channoah Alece Green, 22, of Newport News, Va., abandoned the boy along the busy highway after she became upset with him.

"As she attempted to drive off, the child was trying to get back in the vehicle and was knocked down," said Sgt. J.L. Doss. That led to a hit and run charge.

State police said they found Green and were able to figure out that she was the child's mother after she was involved in a two-car accident on Interstate 95 north of Richmond, Va., later Tuesday night.

What I wonder is, how many people passed that kid before that person stopped to help him.

People are disgusting.

Strange reaction

Oddly, I had the opposite reaction. 495 is 8-10 lanes of interstate, where cars are going 55-90 miles an hour, depending on traffic. I figured the kid might not have been out there that long at all. Because if I saw a toddler standing by a road like that I'd make every effort to stop. There would be no reason he could be there that could convince me to drive past. And I think most reasonable adults would be with me on that. Even if only half the people in the world agreed with me, I bet 100 cars or more would pass him in one minute. Even if only 10 of those people saw him, I bet five of the people who saw him would have stopped.

The only tricky part is that it is such a dangerous high speed road. A lot of people just might not see him, especially if he got scared and hid. And then it might be difficult to get pulled off the road once you did see him.

But you gotta figure somebody actually witnessed his mother hit him with the car. If those people could have reacted fast enough to get off the road, he might hardly have been there at all.

Anyway, in the face of that horrible story, those were my first thoughts. I think your reaction is probably more logical. I doubt we'll ever get much more detail than that story gave...

You have more faith in humanity than I do, it seems. :)

Upset? This doesn't excuse anything. Are there even words to describe how execrable this is? Take her out back and shoot her.
I thought I had it rough just because my mother used to beat the snot out of me. At least it never occurred to her to run me down with the car.
