Carmen is selling her house.

Cellmate and I immediately tell her to make the house smell good.

I said, bake some cookies.

Cellmate said, microwave some spices.

I said, throw in an orange!

Carmen said, for prosperity!

Then she said, you know this is witchcraft!

Ha! I told her! She was shocked! Apparently that is not a common practice in Venezuela, where she's from! :) However, Jewish Cellmate had heard of it, and so had I, though possibly FROM Jewish Cellmate.

So, is the idea to make the place seem more home-like? Friendlier? Or are the cookies a bribe for potential buyers?

Makes the place friendlier. Creates the fantasy that it *always* smells like that! :) And some people do leave the cookies out, as treats for people who come to the house.

The same reason you clear out the closets to make them seem bigger, clean the bathrooms so they won't be disgusting (*snicker*), etc.
