Computers should not be organic like that
Feb. 1st, 2005 12:37 pmSo, this morning I got to work.
I logged into AIM and G-mail and MSN. Tried LiveJournal, which was way tempermental. Couldn't get to AOL at all. Then AIM went haywire. Then I couldn't access g-mail or LJ, but could still get to other websites. Then I couldn't get to any websites, but could still chat with Uisgich on MSN. Then everything went out.
But my phone was still working. I hvae broadband phone, which requires a functioning internet connection. I was clearly connected. Just not getting anything.
Everybody else in the office was cool.
Then I logged in via laptop, and THAT was fine.
Then, suddenly, Internet was back on my desktop and all was right with the world.
My computer guy got back to me just now. Apparently AT&T had a big problem with one of their DNS servers this morning. So now I know how to change DNS servers at the drop of a hat.
But that was weird. Computers should either work or not work. The way my web access went down was like one light being shut off at a time. Totally weird.
And I am still calm, cool and collected. But the beeping office equipment in the next office is seriously testing my resolve... *glares at the bimbos next door*

Date: 2005-02-02 03:05 am (UTC)I wanted to scream, "Unplug the damn thing, call the person, and tell them to RESEND THE F******* FAX!!!!!" Um. Was a little annoyed. But you have to hear this thing. Very, very, very loud. Very high pitched. Like the world is ending because the fax machine is out of toner. Often, it runs out of toner when they aren't there. Cellmate and I have started unplugging it without remorse.
They aren't bimbos. But they are two young Hispanic women who sometimes seriously lack common sense. And one of them dresses like the office slut. But they are very nice and I was mostly mad at them...
