As someone who weeps pathetically at sad movies (and therefore avoids them like The Plague), I was highly insulted this evening to discover the TNT Kleenex Tearjerker Movie. So, with the extremely hostile attitude that not one tear would fall, I watched Sliding Doors.

First, must say I love John Hannah (to whom The Husband and I tend to refer as “that little Scottish guy” or sometmes "brother of The Mummy"), even though he’s hardly ever in anything good.

Second, usually like Gwennyth Paltrow. Have liked Jeanne Tripplehorn in everything I’ve seen her in. Really liked Zara Turner. All were good in this, though I hated to see Tripplehorn as "the other woman."

That said, the whole damn movie insulted me. Who wrote that thing?! Was it trying to be some kind of artsy movie? Because the door metaphor got really, really tired. It was like whoever wrote it had a list of buttons they wanted to push. Which storyline is real? Is some portion of it a dream? Boyfriends who have wives. Sordid affairs where girlfriends meet. Pregnancies everywhere (have these people never heard of condoms, or possibly chemical birth control?). And who thougth any woman in the audience was going to be sympathetic to Jerry when Helen had James on the hook?! Hit by car. Fall down stairs. Babies lost. Death. Second chances. What a load of idiocy!

I am extremely irritated because I feel like this movie was supposedly written for me, the 30-50-something female movie-goer. So I could cry and sniffle and get all doe-eyed over James and Helen and possibly feel fraught over Helen and Jerry. As mentioned above, I never watch these kind of movies. Are they all like this? Is there a whole genre of incredibly stupid, hypothetically romantic "comedies" (IMDB tagline: There are two sides to every story. Helen is about to live both of them ...at the same time. Romance was never this much fun.) out there written for women? Is there actually an audience brain dead enough to watch this detritus of the film industry?

The actors in this are just not enough to make it worthwhile. Not *even* John Hannah's accent could get me to watch this thing again. Sorry, little Scottish guy...
