Azramoon41: now why would you get up just cuz Husband gets up?
Azramoon41: if he had the flu, would you think it a good idea to get the flu too
Baranduin72: Child! :-P
Azramoon41: who's a child?
Baranduin72: No! That was a Southern expression of exasperation. Prounounced "Chahld!" and said with much force and slightly amused irritation.
Azramoon41: oh, I see
Baranduin72: Said the blind man to his deaf son.

Azramoon41: I got a funny story
Azramoon41: did I tell you how I swore at the loose dog in the yard the other day?
Baranduin72: No!
Azramoon41: oh, ok. some background is needed for this one
Baranduin72: *waits patiently and wide-eyed*
Azramoon41: the loop I walk the little dog on had a house where the house is full of junk and they deal drugs
Azramoon41: it's a pretty wide open loop of about 1/4 mile, houses are spaced apart, but everyone knows this one house is full of trouble. little kids run around not looked after. reminds me of my childhoold
Azramoon41: one time walking by this big husky type dog jumps out of a truck with this chain that you usually tye a ship up with attached to the collar, but the dog is loose, and come after the little dog
Azramoon41: an 8 y.o. little girl is in the truck playing some kind of game but I'm so freaked I just start yelling get your dog get your dog
Azramoon41: finally some one in the house comes running out, her dad probably
Azramoon41: after that I carried my hiking stick
Azramoon41: or walked with hiking boots
Azramoon41: rarely do I see anyone or dogs
Azramoon41: but the other day I'm walking by and I spot a big shepherd rottie mix, young dog
Azramoon41: he sees us, and the little dog, and his thought bubble is "snack"
Azramoon41: no one is around, so I'm really just talking to myself, but loudly
Azramoon41: I say, Goddammit, you come over hear, I'm gonna kick you so fucking hard
Baranduin72: LOL! And?
Azramoon41: well, apparently a windown must have been open because right then the dog spun around and I saw a shade move and the dog went into the house
Azramoon41: I mean, I know all about ppl who deal in drugs, i.e. pot, and they are on top of what goes on around them, and pay attention to that one thing, so they are aware that I do come around the same time of day, everyday
Azramoon41: they obviously heard me
Baranduin72: Heh. A bitch not to be messed with.
Azramoon41: no, and I would have kicked that dog.
Baranduin72: Of course.
Azramoon41: it was pretty funny. I really didn't know anyone was there
Azramoon41: it wasn't the same dog as before, but it was not a first time incident
Baranduin72: Husband likes to talk about how bad dogs are for defense if the person attacking you isn't scared of them... Easy to kick a dog, or climb a tree, or poison/drug a gaurd dog...
Azramoon41: I'm not sure about that. I have been bit when breaking up a dog fight. but the dog wouldn't have been after me, the dog was focused on Daisy
Azramoon41: I was bit by accident, but it was quite painful
Baranduin72: True. And bites can be vicious. But Husband's point being that dogs for defense not everything they are cracked up to be. So many people are just plain phobic about dogs...
Azramoon41: the thing about when dogs are after the dog you are walking, they aren't focused on you at all
Baranduin72: True. Giving you an advantage.
Azramoon41: an element of surprise
Baranduin72: Yup. And with the bigger brain, time to plan...
Azramoon41: I have to disagree with Husband about dogs for defense
Azramoon41: especially if you are a woman. dogs can be very protective of women
Baranduin72: Don't forget, Husband is probably nearly a foot taller than you, with disproportinally long legs and arms. And probably stronger. He might do better in a fight with a dog than you would, just cause he's farther from the action... But I tend to be in the middle. Dogs intimidate ALOT of people, and they are dangerous. Just because they aren't as dangerous as many people think, doesn't mean there isn't a good reason to go for a walk with a dog. Husband's point is usually that you shouldn't depend upon a dog. Take mace, or some other self defense weapon.
Azramoon41: unless someone shoots and kills the dog, I believe you are completely protected
Azramoon41: breed dependent, of course
Azramoon41: I'm not talking about little stoopid dogs, I mean taking one of the working breeds with you
Baranduin72: Yup.
Azramoon41: a predator can use those weopons on you, not a dog
Azramoon41: no one would even try if you have a dog. I know. there is nothing quite like the safety you have when you walk with a big dog
Azramoon41: it blew me away when I first started with buddy [AN: very large, very sweet, former police dog - rotweiller]. men crossed the street
Azramoon41: men turn around and go in the opposite direction just to avoid you
Azramoon41: it's as if you are walking with your own personal cop
Baranduin72: See, I think you are right. A dog like Buddy is gonna intimidate the average mugger. Why bother a person with a dog like Buddy, when there are easier targets. Even a big Lab is probably enough to make a typical criminal reconsider. And if they have a gun to kill the dog, they could use it on you if you didn't have the dog. On the other hand, dog doesn't make you invincible...
Azramoon41: the more bad the person, the more fear they feel when they see a big dog. there is something instinctual about it. Normal people don't understand it b/c we haven't been "bad" But, cops get that reaction from "bad" guys all the time.
Baranduin72: Interesting.
Azramoon41: I couldn't figure out why I getting this avoidance from a small % of men, and then I realized they were thugs, and they were reacting to the police dog effect, not because Buddy was doing anything aggressive
Azramoon41: and I think cops get the same reaction from thug-types. They know a thug when they see one. The uniform brings out a reaction that civilians don't have a clue about
Azramoon41: I have seen that look in a small % of men's eyes, but in another aspect, other men fell all over Buddy, kissing and hugging him
Baranduin72: Animal lovers. So sweet!
Azramoon41: well, he was a macho guy type of dog
Azramoon41: the guys who actually got down and kissed him were very nice ppl
Azramoon41: surprised the hell out of me though
Baranduin72: People who know dogs can tell a nice dog from a mean one, usually.
Baranduin72: Though that is a certain risk, that you might have it wrong.
Azramoon41: the dogs tell you
Baranduin72: And of course, dogs sense your confidence...
Azramoon41: Buddy would instinctively move in another direction if there was something about a person, like they were afraid
Azramoon41: nothing more dangerous then a scared animal, be it animal or human animal
Azramoon41: I used to keep running into this one woman out in our usual walking field and was so afraid of the dogs. She was always turning around and looking at them. Buddy wouldn't go near her and Gia, either. After several encounters where she slowed her progress down so much by looking over
Azramoon41: her shoulder, I finally told her to just keep going, they weren't interested in her
Azramoon41: I was exasperated by her
Azramoon41: she was scaring the dogs
Baranduin72: Too bad you can't help people like that get over their problem. It's one thing to respect animals, another to be stupidly scared.
Azramoon41: it's funny. it's the little dogs that are the problem
Azramoon41: they have no brains, poor temperments and pretty much bite anythng
Azramoon41: they are untrainable, and spoiled beyond belief and their owners think their antics are cute
Azramoon41: if you blew them up to the size of a big dog and let them do the same behaviors they would be seized and put to sleep in a new york minute
Azramoon41: brainless twerps

Azramoon41: oh, I just thought of something else about dogs for protection
Baranduin72: Hmmm?
Azramoon41: dogs can detect aggression long before the person even starts it
Azramoon41: they can feel out a bad person
Azramoon41: I remember once these kids were behind me walking in a field. I wasn't even paying attention, but Buddy turned and gave them a look
Azramoon41: then I noticed them and it made me think
Azramoon41: not that they were going to do anything, but he detected something
Azramoon41: and they were quite a long ways away
Azramoon41: 50 yds
Azramoon41: the dogs can sense things a person can't
Baranduin72: Interesting.
Azramoon41: dogs can size a person up instantly
Azramoon41: there are some "dog speak" things you can do to "talk" to them and tell them you are not aggressive
Azramoon41: but, you can't do much to change the way you smell, which is based on how you feel
Azramoon41: when I say not aggressive, I mean not aggressive to the dog, not aggressive in the sense of doing harm to the person
Azramoon41: if a person is a thug, the dog will sense that yards away
