Christmas

It was a beautiful, quiet holiday this year.

The Small Boy came with me to work for the holiday party, then for half a day on Christmas Eve. He was good and sweet, as usual, charming everyone. The Fellowship came with us, though he spent most of his time drawing.

Christmas Eve I put the grill together. We marinated some London Broil for steak and chicken thighs for Rosemary Chicken. I made Cuban Bread and mashed potatoes. It turned out really well, though I lost a lot of my appetite from standing in the smoke while cooking. The Husband liked the steak so much that I went out a bought a bunch more the day after Christmas and grilled enough for him to have for breakfast for several days. Also made a batch of very well received brownies.

On Christmas day, I used the rest of the chicken thighs to make chicken and dumplings on Christmas Day. They were so incredibly good! Also made pierogi, including ones with blueberry filling that went over very well.

Christmas morning was very fun. The Small Boy got LOTR Chess from his grandfather and LOTR Monopoly from Santa. The Husband got LOTR Trivial Pursuit from me and The Small Boy. The Small Boy was very excited about his Warg and rider. He also got the two Harry Potter movies from us, How To Draw Nemo, Nak-Naks from his grandfather. I got my Pirates, a couple of Sharpes, and the soundtrack to Master and Commander (which is incredibly good and which I have been listening to constantly for days). The Husband got The Princess Bride, The Lion in Winter, The Kids are Alright, and a couple of books.

We watched The Princess Bride after opening presents. Then The Husband, who was suffering from a really hideous head cold, went to have a nap and The Small Boy and I played chess and monopoly.

On Saturday, The Small Boy and I piled into the van and went down to Roanoke to visit Granddad. John, Heather, Liam, Mom and Dad came up from NC/SC. The Small Boy and I got there first and TSB spent the afternoon regaling his 80-year-old great-grandfather with the names of his Fellowship action figrues and an explanation of why Pippin and Merry are taller than the other hobbits, and the names of his bad guys, etc. Granddad took it all in stride with good grace, despite the fact that I'm sure it was almost complete gibberish to him. I love him!

Liam is adorable. He walks like a champ now, though still clearly toddling. He was so good-natured and sweet for the entire visit, despite the fact that he had a cold and hadn't had his usual nap. The Small Boy interacted with him very well, though he tended to talk to Liam exactly like he talks to the cat! *snortle*

It was a great visit, and so nice to have everybody in one place. John's new job sounds great. Mom and Dad brought pictures of the kittens and their bird sighting.

Overall, a good Christmas!
