Why are gas engines so fiddly?

The answer - plastics. Wait, no! Spark plugs! :D Diesel engines use an air compression and fuel injection ignition system. Also, to make the diesel engine workable with the high pressures the system requires, the engine parts are much stronger than the parts of a gasoline engine.
