:)
We watched the pilot this evening, AG33 and myself. We were inspired to watch by that joke Amanda Tapping played on him during the filming of the Antartica episode, where she said, "Seven years on MacGyver and you're MacUseless!" or something to that effect.
Anyway, AG33 and I were thinking it would be amusing to make a database of all the things MacGyver did and the weird stuff he did it with. So you could look up "gum" and find out all the ways he used gum in one of his MacGyverisms.
In this episode, Mac DID fire some kind of assault rifle. WE SAW IT!!!
Also, in this episode, Mac lived in an observatory with a BIG telescope. Jack would have been SOOOOOOO jealous.
Flare gun blasts himself and another guy away from cliff so they can parachute
Paperclip prevents missile exploding
Rubberband, a stick, string, matches, and a gun creates a trip wire that sets off the gun and creates a distraction.
A laser to light a ciggarette
A ciggarette (well, three, to be exact, which he smoked ALL AT THE SAME TIME, Jack would have been SOOOOOOO jealous) to create smoke to detect laser beams.
Lens from his bionoculars to redirect the laser to shoot its own source and self destruct. We should cross reference this one under laser as well as bionoculars.
Used a firehose to move a large beam in an obstructed corridor
He found a shoe, but didn't use it for much interesting. Just carried around a woman's shoe for a scene or so.
Used chocolate bars to seal a leaking tank of sulfuric acid. (Here a I pause to again laugh myself to TEARS over the premise of this episode. Moving on...)
Ripped up his manly, smelly plaid flannel shirt for rags to protect the main characters from poison gassssssss. (Put an extra s on there, requests AG33.)
Some sodium metal, a cold capsule, a jar with a lid, and some water to make a bomb to break through a wall.
Used an entire power generating plant to send Morse code signal to people on the surface.
In this episode, Mac and the main chick kissed several times, quite chastely, and Mac expressed come dismay that she had kissed him despite having a cold. I note that he DID look up her skirt as they were climbing that ladder.
And that's all I can think of right now.
In all, quite an amusing way to fill an hour.
We went and checked. RDA was 34 or 35 when they filmed that pilot. He looked like SUCH a baby. His hair was great in it, too. But seeing that the show started in '85 makes me laugh again at the fact that during the show Mac has an angst filled episode where he turns thirty. Considering that he was in Vietnam, that would have made him 15 in 1970, so dude. Whoa. This is my favorite continuity error ever in my personal history of watching TV and movies. Yes. I know. When I was in high school you could have just called me Patty. Or Selma.
UPDATE! Ha! I knew it! It's been done! Sorta!
So, all that really needs to be done is organize it. *goes off to find out if someone already did*
UPDATE2: Do we really think testing the heat of a door with a stick counts as a MacGyverism? I ask you. Also, AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Sorry.

Date: 2007-02-08 03:38 am (UTC)The ridiculous cheesiness, ep after ep, gets hard to take. Maybe if I'd watched it back in the '80s I'd have a special nostalgia glow, but I didn't. So, really, my favorite thing about the pilot/MacGuyver in general was the handporn.
Grade A+ hand porn!

Date: 2007-02-08 04:54 am (UTC)I’m sick, miserable, whiney, and now, thanks to you, blearily excited that Mac’s wearing the exact same gloves I am! (Although mine are rather new, not from the 80’s. Really.) I’ve only seen a handful :) of MacGyver eps, and am totally with you on the gorgeous, silver hair.
*hand!porn squee*

Date: 2007-02-08 11:33 am (UTC)It helps to watch shows like this when you're too little to know better. I also used to LIVE for The A-Team... *rolls eyes*
AG33 likes MacGyver. So maybe I will watch it with him and laugh and enjoy RDA and leave it at that.

RDA watches MacGyver with his daughter, so you can share that. :-)

Date: 2007-02-09 04:42 pm (UTC)Did you see on one of the pre-season special shows, Rainbow Sun Francks (from SGA) said he had RDA sign a picture for him when they first met, and the pic was a publicity headshot from MacGyver (mullet and all). Awesome, and RDA took it in stride.
