BEANS! First picking. That colander is a foot and a half wide, so that's some beans. I'll have a snap-party in a minute, watch something on the iPad and snapsnapsnap.

It's 4000% humidity outside but I managed to pull two large buckets of weeds, picked raspberries (not many today but I have a lot accumulating in the freezer), pulled up some viney stuff, checked the grapevine and counted over a dozen halfway grown grape clusters, the grapes are about 1/2" big and green and beautiful. Then trimmed five tomato plants, and picked all those beans.

Sure glad we decided on a 'small temporary garden' this year. *eyeroll*

I am like….90% sure I’m going camping this Friday.

It depends a bit on the weather, but I’m mostly packed, I’ve cooked food that’s currently waiting in the freezer, and I have acquired the third Diane Mott Davidson book to read.

The plan is to leave work early, catch the train to the campground, camp overnight, and in the morning hike out to a different train station further down the line, about a seven-mile trek, to do a longer endurance test than last weekend’s. Then I’ll catch the train home around noon on Saturday.

If something goes wrong, I can catch an evening train home on Friday until eight o’clock, or starting in the morning at 5:30, with little to no exertion. It’s pretty low-risk and I’m well stocked. I don’t have a sleeping pad, but my backpack has a partial one built-in, and I have one arriving tomorrow (though it might be too bulky, we’ll see). And honestly in this heat, I might just sleep on top of my sleeping bag in any case.

Worst case scenario, the campground has heated, lockable shower cubicles with nice big floors. I’ve slept on worse.

Caaaaaaamping! *jazz hands*

The Guardian: Trump had undisclosed second meeting with Putin, White House confirms

New York Times: Trump and Putin Held a Second, Undisclosed, Private Conversation

Note: it was "private" as in "out of earshot of anyone except Putin's translator" and "not mentioned to the public". It was not private as in "it was held in view of most of the other G20 leaders OMFG ARE YOU KIDDING ME".

Just to make the whole thing even stupider (on Buttercup's part) and more of a blatant power play (on Putin's).

[tumblr.com profile] plaidadder breaks this shit down: A Million Encores: Putin And our Playable President

And spells out one point in particular:

Why do we know about this? Because some of the European G-20 leaders were so concerned about this that they called their global risk consultant to get his opinion on it. That’s what Ian Bremmer does: he assesses global political risk for people who want to use it to make investment decisions.

For the sake of pedantic clarity: much as I like saying that, I don't actually have scurvy -- quite.

I do presently have plasma vitamin C levels which (Google tells me) would qualify me for a scurvy diagnosis if I was showing any particular symptoms. Which I'm not, beyond my usual levels of fatigue and physical crud (there's stuff -- flare-up of an old injury, etc. -- which, with hindsight I could construe as maybe related somehow, but basically I'm very well, and said stuff would not have made me suspect that anything was wrong). Possibly I'd get symptoms if I let the deficiency run on longer, but that's an experiment I am disinclined to try.

N.B.: this is on an intake of fruit and veg which should easily supply far more than the RDA from diet alone, plus supplementation of a gramme of vitamin C a day.

Which is absurd mega-dose levels.

It used to be two grammes, as that's what it took to drag my blood levels back into the normal range when this showed up on test results before; this past year I suggested tapering down to half-as-ridiculous and monitoring my blood levels to see if they stayed okay. Which they did, at least until last autumn.

Then I was getting a blood test for something else completely, my GP suggested checking my vitamin C levels, and boom, they have fallen through the floor again.

So now, back to double-ridiculous doses and waiting to re-test.

My medical Google-fu is usually pretty good, but it's failed me so far on this. I've asked my doctor to consult colleagues and see if I should be referred to a relevant consultant or WTF, on the basis that it's such a bizarre and extreme test result we should probably see if there's an underlying reason that could or should be treated (or, for example, something which might cause the test to give inaccurate results).

Anyway, I thought I'd lob it to the hive mind in case anyone's heard of a similar case or know of something that could cause this, because I am so baffled. And I realize that my belief that bizarre medical things should happen because of reasons has been shown to be delusional before, but still.

... maybe I have a tapeworm that consumes nothing but vitamin C.

So many photos. At least they're resized so they should load decently? If you want to see one larger, just click on it (or open in new tab).

old wooden sign with Beagle Pups For Sale hand lettered in black paint on a white background
Last Saturday, D went to an auction and his purchases included the contents of some sheds on the property, most of which was scrap metal (or is now anyway). He found this sign laying flat in one old cabinet, so covered with dust you couldn't read it. And now it's mine.

On to the garden pictures! )

Today's the kind of day that would be both better and worse if I were working for someone else. To be fair, that's true of most days, but this one is a little more evenly matched than the usual scale tip in favor of better self-employed. The weather has me in a serious case of brain fog and that completely saps my self-motivation skills, and going into the week without a specific schedule of things to accomplish hasn't helped (although they might just have been more things not getting accomplished, honestly). Being woke up between 4 and 6 am by pounding rain 3 days this week might also have something to do with it.

Fortunately, there's very little chance of rain for the next 7 days in the forecast, and tomorrow looks to be partly sunny, so that's a definite upswing. Today is full clouds after 10 in/25.4 cm of rain in the last 4 days: 5 in/12.7 cm the first half of Monday, 3 in/7.62 cm in 2-3 hours Wednesday, and almost another 2 in/5.08 cm in 2 hours this morning. Needless to say, we're a little waterlogged. Our property has been doing okay in terms of drainage at least, even with all the ditches* full and river up. The drainage tile we installed the last two years is paying off and the new raised beds are basically my favorite thing ever now.

*Shallow types and the ones deep enough to swallow an SUV because farm country in "former" swamp ground

Anyway, I didn't plan a lot for this week because I've worked a little ahead and wanted to use that cushion to catch-up on household chores and other random things while the weather was the inconvenient-for-work sort. Which means feeling guilty for not getting a lot accomplished is like feeling you frittered away a weekend reading when you'd planned to do spring cleaning; it's really not the end of the world, but I think I'm always discomfited by a drop in motivation, regardless of how often it happens. Gotta love social conditioning.

I have at least caught up on laundry, kept myself fed (D's been running on food we both contributed to last week and weekend, whereas I wanted to use some of what's coming out of the garden), and accomplished some low key volunteering and errands including Jack's annual check-up, so that's all something. Basically it's a brain squirrels situation where they're confused due to being atmospherically stoned. Or something. I have a half dozen tabs open of DW posts to comment on so if you get one of those, uh, hopefully they're coherent.

Don't I sound like exactly the kind of person that should be wielding sharp knives in the kitchen in a few hours? Tonight is Thai basil chicken (aka Gai Pad Krapow per The Woks of Life, which is the recipe I'm largely following, but using hand chopped chicken thighs and also jalapeños because I'm weak). This is the primary reason I'm growing so much Thai basil in the first place - I put in a few plants last year, made this dish, and fell absolutely in love. I've yet to see this type of basil available anywhere around me and I only sighted seedlings a couple of times in other areas of the state this past spring.

Ideally, I'll even have pictures to share tomorrow once the sun comes out. I mean, ideally I'd also have some recs and also clean the counters, scrub the other half the floor I started last week, etc., so we'll see how that goes but it could happen.

Where someone gets flustered into confessing more than they were actually accused of?

It has to be a trope, but a dive into TV Tropes has failed me. It's not quite Accidental Public Confession -- something more specific than that.

I mean, as I understand it, the NYT had sources who described a message they had seen in which "Skittles" Jr. was told that the information he was hoping to get was from Russia.

The e-mails he Tweeted show that he he was explicitly told he was going to get "high level and sensitive information" as "part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump."

From the WaPo: The email exchange showed clearly that Trump Jr. understood he was taking the meeting as a way of channeling information directly from the government of a nation hostile to the United States to his father’s campaign.

Here is a journalist who was chasing this story for a year. Here is the sound of his head exploding.

I'm still boggling that they wrote it in an e-mail, "part of Russia and its government support for Mr. Trump", come to the meeting so we can provide "very high level and sensitive information", maybe I've watched too much spy tv but I vaguely thought there'd be some sort of subterfuge, some sort of nudge-and-wink, if not actual covert communication, but LOLNOPE.

[tumblr.com profile] sashayed's commentary: #SUBJECT: wanna come 2 treason meeting #FROM: collusion at kremlin dot ru

(Like [tumblr.com profile] plaidadder, I have wondered if it's so absurdly blatant on purpose, as part of a Russian intelligence scheme of some kind. Or maybe everyone's just that fucking stupid.)

And then Skittles forwarded the whole e-mail chain to Kushner and Manafort at their work e-mail addresses.

Also, it's been suggested that talking about "adoptions" is basically standard code for talking about sanctions (the Russian ban on adoptions was imposed in response to US sanctions; re-starting adoptions would presumably mean lifting sanctions):

In which case, if Skittles is actually telling the truth that they went to the meeting and then this wacky lawyer just talked about adoptions so he concluded it was a dead end -- his official line of defense is essentially "I totally wanted to collude, but was too fucking stupid to recognize the quid pro quo being offered."

Also, anyone else have a McDonald's earworm? ("Collusion: I'm lovin' it".)

My parents signed me up for Nextdoor, which is like some kind of community-based mini facebook, and I am signed up in their neighborhood, which is (as we have established) The Boondocks.

I don’t mind belonging to their Nextdoor, it means that I will be kept abreast of local news, but also the local news is hilarious.

The latest messages concern a HEATED DISCUSSION about hoof trimming because someone posted asking if anyone knows a farrier who will trim miniature horse hooves, which apparently most farriers have some kind of BASELESS PREJUDICE against according to this poster. Battle lines are quickly being drawn between the various camps including:

Miniature horses don’t need hoof maintenance the way regular horses do
Miniature horses ABSOLUTELY need hoof maintenance you monsters
Farriers who won’t do miniature horse hooves ain’t shit
Farriers who won’t do miniature horse hooves have their reasons
Miniature horses are some bullshit
Everybody shut up about miniature horses
I Have A Miniature Horse For Sale

I can’t wait to see who wins. I suspect it will be me.

I just got home and the apartment REEKS of burnt toast. Which is weird since a) nothing is on fire (I checked), b) I haven’t even MADE toast in like a week, c) it didn’t smell like that this morning when I got home from running, and d) the smell is most intense when standing on my welcome mat just inside the door.

I think Ghost is mad at me. They often express themselves with smells near the doorway. But I haven’t even done anything! The designated Ghost Drawer in the card catalogue shelf (under G, for Ghost) is open and everything, I checked.

I cannot order you a pizza tonight, Ghost, I already have grocery delivery coming and I don’t want the Domino’s guy and the Peapod guy to make it awkward. We’ll have pizza on Thursday.

Not that we're jumpy or another, but more than one among my London friendgroup went BATTLE STATIONS IT'S HAPPENING IT'S HAPPENING when we got a Transport For London e-mail saying:

From midday until approximately midnight on Wednesday 12 July, a number of roads in and around Trafalgar Square and Whitehall will be closed to all traffic. This is due to an event.

However, further Googling suggests that it's just the state visit of the King and Queen of Spain, so false alarm.

Obviously not impossible they might try to sneak Trump in while everything's closed down anyway, but speculation was that they probably wouldn't want Trump backlash hitting the Spanish royals (OTOH, May's made worse miscalculations).

Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday! It's a brief one today, which I appreciate given I'm just getting back from vacation.

Ways to Give:

[tumblr.com profile] readera's partner, J, has been in the ER multiple times in the past three months, and their finances are very strained because of it. They're raising $300-$500 for transportation costs and medicine; you can read more here; they're currently working to add a donation link, so I would bookmark and check back in a day or two.

[tumblr.com profile] rilee16 is struggling to cover medical expenses after two head injuries last year, and has a fundraiser running to cover living expenses, previous medical bills, and a recent rent increase. You can read more and help out here.

Help For Free:

[tumblr.com profile] steverogersandhiscyborglovers linked to a survey by the Vatican, which is asking for information about the attitudes and values of 16-29 year olds of all faiths, worldwide; it's available in Italian, English, German, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This is the first time the Vatican has put out an online survey and it's an opportunity to share your opinions with the church (even if the demographic gathering is a little limited; they only offer "male" and "female" options for gender). You can take the survey here.
